Welcome to the Suffolk Women's History Network

We are a Suffolk based community group with an interest in the lives of Suffolk women in the past. We would like to see knowledge grow to encompass all areas of our county of Suffolk with the involvement of anyone who shares this interest, whether or not they have any experience in historical research.

Women's history is more than a study of a few great names, or where women have entered traditionally male spheres; it is the study of women's roles in their entirety, their experiences and contributions, their participation in and exclusion from social and political change. History can dismantle stereotypes and reveal women's agency and resilience. We are interested in how gender intersects with race and class to shape women's experiences.

Sources recording women's history are often obscure and hidden. These often require us to think in new ways and to search in different places (that might include the use of diaries, poems and writing, songs, testimonies, art work, photos and more).

The website is intended as a space where interest and information can be shared, contacts made and where a programme of local events will be published.
